I know that there are many posts or articles online that promise to teach you how to build a lifestyle blog, hack growth, and make money lyfestyle blogging.

Before writing this guide, I went through a number of such posts but couldn’t find a concrete tutorial on how to become a lifestyle blogger (from blog set up to showing you how to monetize your lifestyle blog).

How about using a complete guide written in basic terms by an experienced lifestyle blogger

Starting a lifestyle blog or any kind of a blog can be overwhelming as it involves some technical stuff and a lot of time.

have created this step by step guide on how to set up a lifestyle blog and become a successful lifestyle blogger without any prior experience.

Using this guide, you will have an awesome lifestyle blog in less than 20 minutes. I have put all the experience and research I have gathered in the last 10 years of blogging to help you create a profitable lifestyle blogging career.

What is a lifestyle website or blog?

Before I start guiding you how to create a lifestyle blog, I have decided to define a lifestyle blog as there so much confusion online about the right definition of these kind of blogs.

May be you are wondering: What is a lifestyle blog? or What does a lifestyle blogger write about?

What is a lifestyle blog? This is simply any kind of blog that documents a blogger’s life. You will find that most bloggers will define them as general personal blogs.

How popular are lifestyle blogs? Lifestyle blogs come in different types but the common ones will discuss things like fashion, beauty and fitness. Lifestyle blogs are not very popular amongst bloggers starting blogs with sole purpose of making money online because they lack specialization.

Can I start a lifestyle blog and make money? Contrary to what some bloggers say, you can make money blogging with a lifestyle blog. What matters is how well you promote your blog and convert traffic to subscribers.

Since I have answered some of the questions asked by aspiring lifestyle bloggers, lets start building your blog.

What do I need to build a lifestyle blog successfully?

Now that you are passionate to learn how to make a lifestyle blog from scratch, here are a few things that you need to start building your lifestyle blogging business.

Note the use of the word ‘business‘ – Blogging is a business like any other (unless you are blogging for fun).

If you need to earn money from a blog, you have to treat it as a business. Successful blogging starts with a shift in the blogger’s mindset.

I want you to start a lifestyle blog that will help you quit your day job and earn a decent living from your blog. What do I need to get started with lifestyle blogging?

  • Hosting Platform – We have a great deal from Bluehost for our readers. This is where you will keep your blog files.
  • Blog Name and a Domain Name – Read on and I will show you how you can get this for free.
  • Blogging Platform – I will show you how to set up your lifestyle blog on WordPress.
  • Computer and Internet Connection –  You can’t run a blog without the duo.

Don’t worry if anything in the list above seems too technical for you. Read on, I will put everything in a simple way below.

Do I have to learn the process of creating a lifestyle blog from scratch?

No! We actually got you covered. We can help you with free blog set up. If you don’t want (or don’t have the time) to deal with this all technical stuff, you can get a lifestyle blog set up for free (click to learn more) by our technical team.

We provide free and complete wordpress installation and server set up for non-techies who want to start blogging.

1. Identify a Lifestyle Blogging Niche :

Before you get started with the technical stuff, I recommend you take sometime to identify your niche in lifestyle blogging.

How will your lifestyle blog be unique? How will you be different from other new and more established lifestyle bloggers? What will you do differently? What will you do differently to attract more followers?

I see a new lifestyle blog every two days if not daily. People are serious about creating lifestyle blogging sites but the truth is that  most of them do not last go 3 months! Believe it or not!

Don’t rush to create a lifesyle blog before you can identify how you will stand out in the blogging community. I recommend that you take a notebook and come up with more than five (5) key reasons why you believe you will be unique.

You can share the list with a close or friend who will give you genuine feedback. You need to select five or more successful lifestyle bloggers that you follow, analyze them, and identify key things you can do better than them.

I know that judging yourself from the highest niche standards is harsh, but I recommend that you benchmark with the best in the industry to start your blog in the right way.

Once you are convinced that you have all it takes to build a successful lifestyle blog, it is time to brainstorm an attractive and catchy name for your blog.

2. Come Up With an Attractive Blog Name

Once you have successfully identified your strengths and competitive edge, it is time to create a catchy name for your blog.

This is what most bloggers won’t tell you: Take your time and get an appropriate name for your blog. When it comes to building a lifestyle blog sites, proper and informed naming is crucial to the growth of your blog.

I often feel sorry (honestly I do!) for a lifestyle blogger who has put in so many hours of work in a blog only to find that the name they picked while starting out was inappropriate. Imagine building your style blog or any other kind of blog for over 2 years only to find that the used name plus the domain name is someone else’s registered business name.

With all the link bulding and re-branding a  blog is really involving and will definitely leave a dent on your finances or  you risk losing a good number of your followers. I have worked with many online companies trying to rebrand and market postitioning has been a hard nut to crack for most of them.

So how do I go about choosing a name for my lifestyle blogging site? I still belong to the old school of thoughts where I belive notebooks do work!

1. Take a notebook and scrible every idea that comes to head,

2. Talk to your friends or family about the names,

3. Select at least three and use google to find out if someone is using the names,

4.  If you are unable to comeup with a great name, even your name can do the magic!

Infact, I have seen blogs created using personal names ranking better.

3. Buy Hosting + Free Domain Name

As I said above, you need a hosting service before you start building a lifestyle blog on your own using this guide, you need to get a hosting plan from a realiable blog hosting service like Bluehost.

After so many years of helping people make blogs online, I have come to a conclusion that many WordPress experts seem to agree to.

You don’t need a super expensive hosting service to get started with blogging. Yes you might need to upgrade when time comes, but when you are getting started, you need to keep operation costs low until 1 or 2 years down the line when you can go for managed WordPress hosting services.

One (1) to Two (2) years is enough time to earn money from a blog. By this, I mean making serious and stable income blogging. Before the end of this article, I will show you how to make money as a lifestyle blogger.

You can also subscribe to our newsletter for a weekly guide on how to build successful blogging site without having to keep digging on google. There is so much ‘trashy guides’ online. You should learn from the blogging experts.

Back to hosting, I have two recommendations for you: Hostgator or Bluehost. No any other hosting service will beat the two when it comes to affordability and reliability when starting a new blog.

For the sake of this guide, I will use Bluehost because of :

  • It is the hosting that is recommended by creators of WordPress,
  • You will save $15 as Bluehost will give you FREE domain name,
  • They have been providing support for WordPress since 2003,
  • They offer our readers hosting prices as low as $2.95/monthThis is a deal we have secured for our readers.
  • They will help you incase you get stuck setting up your blog or lifestyle website. (Friendly and knowledgeable support team)

These are some of the reason they are recommended not only by WordPress team, but by the most successful bloggers.

Remember that to become one of the best, you need to learn from the most successful bloggers.

Can we begin setting up our blog now? If you have not already visited Bluehost, click on the button below to get started. This will open the hosting service on a new new tab so that you can easily follow through the process.

Step 1: Use The Button Below to Get Started

For your sucess, I have gone through the pain of capturing screenshots for you to have an easy time setting up the blog. Lets get started now:

Before you proceed you need to click the button above so that you can follow the rest of the guide easily. I have made it very easy for you to start making that style blog so that you no longer have an excuse why you are stuck with a 9-5 job while other writers are making a ‘kill‘ online.

All you have to do is to follow the directions in this screenshots.

Step 2: Pick a Blog Hosting Plan

This is the time to select an appropriate plan based on your budget. From the illustration below, you have 3 options: ‘basic’, ‘plus’, and ‘prime’ plans.

You will note that all that differs is the number of features. You don’t have to worry about that. Go with your budget, it will be possible to upgrade your package as need arises. Don’t buy what you don’t need.

As you can see above, if you are just starting a single blog, for now, the basic plan is just fine. Proceed with next steps of signing up.

Step 4: The Chance To Get a Free Domain Name:

You remember me telling you about how you will get a free domain name for your blog? Well it is time to take advatage of this deal that we have sealed for you.
a domain with free domain name at bluehost

If you have a domain already and don’t want the free one, enter it on the box on the right hand side to get instructions on how to transfer it.

NB: Domain name is your blog identity. If you are unable to find a great name, combine one of your name with a keyword and use that. e.g naomistyles.com.

Another thing to consider is whether you should use a .com, .net, .org, or some country TLD for example .co.uk, .me.uk, org.uk. We have covered this extensively here: How to pick a great domain name for your blog.

At this point, I hope you have a domain name and you are ready to proceed. If you need assistance, there is a green bar on the bottom-right of this page.

There is someone always ready to help you that is what we do at here. We offer all the help we can to new bloggers like you.

Step 4: Sign Up For an Account:

As illustrated below, the next step is easy as it only involves you filling your account details. All you need to do is to fill in the form below and go to the next section.

Set Login details

Step 5: Select Hosting Plan Duration:

One thing I love about Bluehost is that they don’t offer monthly plans! They want customers who are committed who are ready to do all it takes to start and grow they online businesses.  Here is the guiding screenshot:

bluehost blog packages

I remember when I was starting my first blog, I was just trying to look for information on how I would make money online. I was so sick of my day job and stress was killing me.

Infact, my first search term on Google was ‘how to get paid to write online’. I was naive and didn’t have someone to guide me. Lucky you! There are some of us who can write a 5,000 word article like this to just help you get started easily and avoid many pitfalls that have seen many blogs and online businesses go down in less than 3 months of starting.

Armed with only $200, I created my blog on Bluehost without any knowledge of blogging. I made sure that I had paid a 2 year hosting on day one without knowing that this will be my motivation to succeed and later partner with the same company.

If I had made a decision to go for a one month hosting plan, without even the hope of even getting $100, my blog would have joined a list of millions of failed blogs that don’t survive past the 3rd month of start up.

Bottom Line: Just to be on the safe side, pick a plan that goes for 1 to 2 years. Blogging is not easy money and you have to pay for some of these expenses once and forget. By the time you are getting the next invoice, you will be a successful lifestyle blogger earning a serious income online

Step 6: Pay For Your Hosting and You Are Done:

This is the last step in setting up the hosting for your blog. Enter the payment details and accept the terms as shown below.
Agree to terms and conditions

After you click on submit button, you will be redirected to a page where you will set your login password. Set the passwords as shown below:

How To Set Account Passwords

After this set up, you will receive an email from Bluehost with login details. You will require these details to login and configure WordPress.

The next section will be to configure WordPress. The following steps will be a bliss. This is something you will do in minutes.

4. Install and Configure WordPress

Bluehost provides a one click installation by use of Mojo Marketplace. You will have an up-to-date WordPress software installed on your new hosts in just a few clicks.

Note that you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of WordPress to do this. Shall we get started?

Before you can install WordPress, you need to login to your Cpanel. Check your email for login details and visit the following link to log in to your personalized control panel: My.Bluehost.com

Bluepost Login

Once Inside the cpanel, scroll down to ‘Website’ section and click on ‘Install WordPress’ as shown in the image below:
Bluehost Cpanel - Install WordPress Section

On clicking the ‘Install WordPress’ Icon, a Mojo Marketplace page will open, click on ‘Install New Scripts’ as shown below:
Bluehost Mojo Marketplace

On the next screen, you will be prompted to select a domain you would like to configure your wordpress for. There is also a box that prompts you enter a directory. In most cases, you don’t need to put anything here. Just select the domain and click on the ‘check domain’ button.

You need to be careful here: Only type or write anything on the directory box if you want to install wordpress on another directory above the main domain.

Have I lost you? I didn’t mean to! In simple terms: If you want to access your website homepage on ‘yourdomaim.com/directory’ instead of ‘ yourdomain.com’, this is only time you can add ‘directory’ on that box.

Ensure everything is Okay and click on ‘Check Domain’. WordPress installation will start immediately. This might take a few minutes. Be patient as the process continues.

If you get an alert ‘It looks like files already exist in this location’, ignore the message.

Once the installation is complete, on the screen, you will get the: Blog Site URL, WordPress admin URL, Username, and Password.

Be sure to keep this information safe as this is what you will use to access your new lifestyle blog. Bluehost will also email you a copy of this data to your email.

Please note that a new domain can take a maximum of 24 hours before propagation.

If you get stuck, please contact the Bluehost team directly. They are very professional and helpful. That is why I still have most of my sites hosted with them.

Now visit: yourdomain.com to access your site.

Congratulations! You have now joined the biggest online community. Now you have a brand new WordPress installed. All you are left with is to write great posts!

But wait! We are not done yet! We have to install a few plugins and also customize the design (look and feel) of our new blog.

May be you are now wondering: What is a plugin? What does plugins have to do with me making a lifestyle blog?

If by any chance you are thinking close to this, allow me to talk define plugins in simplest words possible.

What are WordPress plugins? These are addons that are added to WordPress to add or expand WordPress features.

Which plugins do you need for your new blog? WordPress has a repository of over 40,000 plugins that are used by millions of website owners and developers. The beauty about plugins, you only add what you want.

Here are the most important plugins for your blog when you are getting started:

Contact Form 7: This is one of the most valuable wordpress plugin that you must install on your new lifestyle blog. This plugin will help you create a contact us page and is available for free from the WordPress Repository. From the search engine perspective, a contant us + about page gives you credibility. The page will also help potential advertisers or publishers reach you.

WP Google Analytics: While running a blog as a business (most people call it blogging for money), one thing you must do is understand your blog visitors. If you are looking to drive traffic to your lifestyle blogging website, you can’t ignore the power of analytics.

Incase something happens to your blog, whether you have been hacked or your hosting service has been hit with malware or experienced disk failure, you can actually loose your website. I always advise my readers and clients to always keep a copy (an up-to-date copy) of their blogs and websites in an offsite location just incase something happens.

7. Write Great Content

When it comes to lifestyle blogging, content is king! There is no two ways about it. There are two things that matters particularly in lifestyle blogging.

1. Article Quality: Before you start writing your articles, make sure you research what your target audience is looking for. But How? The best way to discover what other people are searching for, I recommend you use a keyword analysis tool like SemRush. This is a paid tool that will cost you $99.95/month but you can always stop the subsciption when you are not using it.

Another way to find out what you should write about in your lifestyle blog is by analysing a number of successful lifestyle bloggers that you know, find out what they are writing about and do better. Here is an article to guide you when you don’t know what to blog about.

Budget Hack: This is what I have seen many beginners do (who are on budget): You subscribe for one or two month, do research for like 200 topics and pause the subscription. They then focus on writing the 200 posts and marketing them in the next 3 months. After they start making money out of their blogs, they can always activate the subscription and work on scaling their blogs.

2. Quality of your images: You need I can’t stress this enough! If you don’t own a great camera and you have already set up the blog as above, please stop right now and invest in a good camera first. Canon PowerShot G7 X is a great camera to start with while blogging. Also make sure you learn some photo editing skills to make your images appealing.

Irrespective of how best you promote your blog,  these are the two things that will determine how successful your lifestyle blog will become.

8. Promote Your Blog For More Readership

After you have created great content, don’t sit and wait for people to come. You have to get out there and drive traffic to your blog. This is where search engine optimization and social media comes in.

Search Engine Optimization (we will call this SEO from now on) is a great way to get lots of free traffic from Google, but it takes time. I ussually refer to search engine traffic as free since you only need to work on your blog once and forever get people channelled to your blog by google.

Later in this blog, I will show you how you can rank high on search engines using simple.

While you are working on your blog SEO, I recommend you consider Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook as faster ways of getting traffic faster.

For social media, I recommend that you only work on one of the 3 at a time. Don’t  make a mistake many of us made while starting our blogs by trying to push more than one social media account at a time.

For lifestyle blogging, instagram is the best place to start with. Here is a great guide to get you started with instagram blogging
